Hello All,
I would like some clarification on what the portfolio export feature will do.
Initially I had imagined that it would be some kind of zip of files + XML allowing the portfolio to be re-imported into another Mahara system, much like a moodle backup / restore.
If that is the case then I think another option needs to be made available for students to be able to take away their work and access it independantly of Mahara.
A UK University developed an E-Portfolio which they sell commercially, a big criticism of that system was the fact that students could not use their exported material without another E-Portfolio system to re-import into.
They subsequently developed an export that used flat files. I have not seen it, but imagine it has some kind of index page linking to content with links to files, all in a flat HTML structure.
Don't know if that is what you had in mind for the Mahara export?

We don't know how it will
We don't know how it will work yet. We've talked a bit about its general architecture, and that it will likely a) export to LEAP and possibly a Mahara custom format, and b) support exporting to anything through being a pluggable system.
The LEAP export would give users the ability to import their data into other systems. The Mahara custom one would probably allow exporting of all of the data about a user account, even stuff not necessarily portfolio related, so it could be imported into a Mahara later.
We could add another one into the mix, when we get around to planning it - a plain export like you describe.
A plain export would be a
A plain export would be a very useful addition.
I think you will find it is something that others will request... as mentioned it was implemented in a rival product "by popular demand".
