Hi everyone,
Well we have now come up with a timeline for the release of Mahara 1.1. As you might know already, the two major new features in this release will be View Templates, sponsored by Howard Miller/Glasgow University, and shiny new Groups, sponsored by Ray Merrill/GLISI. We would like to thank both groups for giving us the opportunity to make Mahara better for everyone - both Howard and Ray have been great in accomodating compromises in their respective work so that they work better for the Mahara project in general.
We released Mahara 1.1 alpha 1 on Friday, which you can download from eduforge. The 1.1 release will be codenamed Sonorus, following our Release Policy (the 1.0 release was codenamed Alomohora). Most of the feature branches have been merged back to master, and pending some cleanup work, we'll be beginning bugfixing and dealing with a bunch of the issues on the tracker soon. The plan is to do a '''Beta 1 release in early October''' and the '''final release in late October'''. Dates may slip a bit depending on how things go, but we don't anticipate much delay.
There are other improvements going into 1.1 too. Here is an incomplete list:
* User profile pages will now be Views, which users arrange as they like. They will also have a messaging block, which will allow other users to leave them messages, similar to most social networking sites.
* MNET improvements - single sign off will now be possible, and we hope to have improved the stability of the connection too.
* Portfolio API - Penny Leach has merged her work on the Mahara side of the portfolio API, which allows data to be sent from Moodle (and other LMSes) to Mahara's files section. The Moodle side won't debut until Moodle 2.0, but enterprising users can set up both a trunk version of Moodle and Mahara right now to give it a try.
* Group Adding/Inviting process streamlining - we hope to add screens to make it a lot easier for group admins to mass-add and invite users to groups
* Embedding videos and other content in blogs and Views will be possible.
Regarding mahara.org - we're working on it and things are progressing well. It's possible that some forum links might be broken by the upgrade, but we'll try and prevent too many issues. Hopefully the new site will debut before 1.1.

GREAT!
This is great news. We are anxiously awaiting the integration of Mahara Files and Moodle 2.0. This will be a big plus for students to be able to grad their files inside moodle.
Great work. Can't Wait!
Message Block
Will it be possible to TURN OFF the messaging block and/or allow admins and view owners to delete message block entries? This will be a much needed feature for K-12 Schools. Problems can arise and the need to correct any judgment errors by students is a real issue.
The block isn't finished
The block isn't finished yet. We can probably add in support for admins to delete comments.
The disabling/uninstalling is a little different. I imagine the upgrade path to 1.1 will include installing the block, which you could uncomment if you wanted, but we haven't built disabling or uninstalling into Mahara yet. That's a harder problem to deal with.
Thanks Nigel
Thanks. I think in the K-12 environment, we might want to disable this if admins cannot delete comments left in the block.

Hello,
Could you give your best guess as to the likely release date of 1.1?

We might well have a bit of
We might well have a bit of slippage from late October, both myself and RichardM have been busy with other things recently (e.g. I was at the aussie moodlemoot last week and will be at the NZ moodlemoot this week). The best I can say is early-mid November.
